![]() Doyle's belligerent ways become increasingly violent as Karl gets closer to the family, so it isn't difficult to predict how either will react. Yoakam plays Doyle Hargraves, a drunken bully who shacks up with Linda whenever he isn't carousing or picking guitar with a barnyard band. The lone character in Sling Blade that challenges Thornton's throttle-hold on our attention is country music artist Dwight Yoakam, who essays one of the most despicable pieces of Dixie-trash in film history. Thornton is an ambitious observer of Southern life who needed to save a few stories for future films. It takes a patient moviegoer to sit through all the dramatic tentacles that spread from this taciturn anti-hero. Karl never strays far from centerstage, but there's a lot of time in Sling Blade spent on the various personal and moral issues of these characters, plus incidental townfolk along the way. Frank's mother, Linda (Natalie Canerday), is wary of their friendship, especially after she gets advice from her best friend Vaughan (John Ritter), a gay man coping with narrow-minded rural life. One of the first people he meets is a young boy named Frank (Lucas Black), who treats Karl like an equal, which makes sense considering Karl's stunted emotional development. He returns to his hometown, where everybody still knows his name and deeds. When the interview and the short film are finished, Karl is a free man. That film has been remade to form the first 15 minutes of Sling Blade, featuring a stunning monologue by Karl/Thornton that explains to a young reporter who he is and who he killed. Thornton introduced this marvelous dramatic creation three years ago, in a fine short film titled Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade that made the festival rounds and shows up now and then on the Sundance Channel. Two grunts that sound like "uh-huh" usually follow whatever Karl says, agreeing with himself since nobody else would take the time. Although thoroughly institutionalized, Karl is deemed fit to be released into the outside world. Karl Childers is a mentally disabled man who has been in the custody of the state mental hospital since the age of 12 for killing his mother and her lover. Karl was raised to believe that he was anevil inflicted on his parents, so he steers clear of the dirty stuff. Watch Sling Blade 1996 full movie 1080p, watch Sling Blade online free. One grunt means disapproval, usually if someone brings up a sexual topic or curses. Sometimes Karl can't think of anything to say, so he just grunts. Then there is the voice, a laconic Southern growl steeped in pain and always lazy on the last syllable. Slitted eyes and a jutted jaw give him a determined face, until you notice he's biting his upper lip a bit, in some vague hint of repression and/or self-abuse. A nervous habit makes his neck appear to have constant crick in it. Karl has been lashed by life it shows in his gait, which shuffles as if his legs were shackled together, and his penitent bowed head and folded hands while addressing anyone. The most unshakable memory is Thornton's astounding transformation from affable film artist to Karl Childers, a emotionally handicapped man-child and murderer who, at the film's beginning, is spending his last hours in a psychiatric hospital after a 25-year stay.
